Depuis la campagne anti-shakespearienne lancée par l’Américaine Delia Bacon dans les années 1850, quelque 78 candidats ont été proposés au titre du « vrai Shakespeare ». Outre la fascination que les théories du complot paraissent exercer sur ces esprits qui portent parfois des noms aussi célèbres que ceux d’Emerson, de Mark Twain, de Freud ou encore, parmi les acteurs, d’Orson Welles, de Derek Jacobi ou de Mark Rylance, la haine contre l’homme de Stratford, garçon illettré et rustre ou encore vulgaire imposteur est quasiment sans limites. Pourquoi donc tant de haine ?
