The Role of International Actors in the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Crimea

View through CrossRef
The article explores the role of the international community in the reintegration of temporarily occupied Crimea, with a particular focus on the significance of international support, diplomatic efforts, and economic sanctions in response to Russia’s illegal annexation of the peninsula in 2014. It analyzes the activities of key international actors such as the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, the OSCE, G7, Turkey, China, Global South countries as well as their influence on the political, economic, and social situation in Crimea. Special attention is given to issues related to humanrights, humanitarian assistance, and the restoration of the rule of law in the annexed territory through international cooperation. The article further examines the role and key activities of the Crimea Platform as a central mechanism for coordinating and consolidating international efforts aimed at the reintegration of Crimea and the restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty. Additionally, it highlights the initiative’s achievements at both national and strategic levels, while also identifying existing challenges, including the limited effectiveness of implemented measures and the absence of enforceable mechanisms to hold the aggressor accountable. The author concludes that, with respect to the international agenda, the primary task of the global community is to maintain sustained economic, diplomatic, and military pressure on Russia. The return of Crimea to Ukraine can only be realized through a comprehensive, coordinated approach involving the collective actions of international partners.
