Atedius Melior’s Parrot (Statius’ Silvae 2.4)

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter offers a close reading of Poem 4 from the second book of the Silvae of Statius. In a tribute to Melior’s recently deceased parrot, Statius’ brilliant word usage and, more generally, the poet’s use of intertexts evoke the poetry of Lucretius, Virgil, Horace, and especially Ovid in an original composition that brings the ‘dead pet poem’ into the imperial age by emphasising the power of words and their confrontation with silence.
