NOTE BIOGRAFICE DESPRE GRIGORE BUIUCLIU ȘI JUNIMEA

View through CrossRef
Grigore Buiucliu was a member of the Junimea society in Iași starting from 1866, being very acquainted with most of the Junimist political leaders. He was born into an important Armenian family, three of his brothers also being members of Junimea. The surname was rather similar to that of other Armenian families in Romania, so there was quite a bit of confusion regarding his family name. Most of the confusion was caused by the existence of another Grigore Bui(u)cliu, also a lawyer in Iași, but a member of the liberals. However, documents from the Erbiceanu archive allowed us to identify the correct spelling of the surname. In the well-known 1883 medallion painting depicting the members of the organization, Buiucliu is also present, thus recognizing his work in the field of cultural publishing through “Convorbiri Literare” and also his work related to the group organizational dynamics, as the most well known of Junimea’s memoirists would later record. Buiucliu published several articles in the society’s journal, the most notable being trans¬lations from Armenian, another one concerning the firman granted by the Sultan to the Buiucliu brothers, and the polemic with George E. Schina.
