Two Cathedrals

This chapter considers how Stevens was influenced by his mentor, the philosopher George Santayana. It mounts this approach biographically, specifically through a close reading of the sonnets that Stevens and Santayana exchanged on the subject of cathedrals while Stevens was a student at Harvard. This comparative study therefore shows how the influence of Santayana helped Stevens develop his ideas around poetry at this formative stage in his career, including, for example, the aphoristic tendency that Stevens inherited from his mentor.
