Boat needle

CUSTOMS OFFICE with a Case. Of gold with enamel. Needle long, round, on the middle with one in eight spiral laps going to the heel. On the upper end as a knob an ulan mask (czapka, probably by model from Austrian ulanregiment Archduke Karl), the calotte almost hemispherical with black enamel, gold chin strap, laid against the calotte and with the outside ciselled in armour patterns; at the top of the calotte a four-sided elevation with strongly turned sides, covered with red enamel (translucide) on finely striped bottom pattern. At the left side of the elevation a hanging black plume with a kettle in yellow with a black center. On the needle at the top a round loop, in this a pendant of a cartusch box with shoulder strap together a saber and a lance, which cross each other. Without stamps. Weight 8.9 g. L 10.5 cm. Needle, L: 9.2 cm. Cask, H 1.4 cm. Bohemian work, Prague, from 1860; the court jeweler Hieronimus Grohmann. Etui (original): Of wood, rectangular, with a contoured high trap cap, thinned forward and dressed with blue-green skin; on the lid around the edges stripes in blind print; lining of white velvet and white silk (atlas). On the front end pressure clasp of brass. Inside the lid firm stamp in blue. H 4.1 L 12.5 B 4.6 cm.
