Student Simulation Network: Peer to Peer Learning Towards Better Clinical Skills Acquisition
View through CrossRef
The slides introduce the Student Simulation Network (SSN), a simulation-based peer-assisted learning project. It is designed to assist students from various phases (clinical & preclinical) in excelling in clinical skills at AlMareefa University. There's a strong focus on simulated sessions about patient history taking & examination among students. An E-Poster for the SSN was displayed and presented for the 2023 AMEE Conference.

The SSN's Abstract
Background
Student Simulation Network (SSN) is a simulation-based peer-assisted learning project. It is designed to assist students from various phases (clinical & preclinical) in acquiring or excelling in clinical skills. The core activity training prepares junior students from preclinical levels for the transitional phase to clinical groups regarding patient history taking and physical examination skills. It will be managed by Almaarefa (College of Medicine) university students under the supervision of the clinical department.
Summary Of Work
Goals of SSN
• Improve and renovate Almaarefa medical students’ clinical skills.
• Introduce the concept of clinical skills to junior students (preclinical).
• Prepare the students to deal with various types of patients in the future.
• Aid in acquiring essential skills such as self-control, time management, cooperation, teamwork, leadership, and respect for different cultures (diversity).
• Recording the network’s activities in order to upload them on the SSN YouTube channel.
The foundation committee set policies and regulations governing SSN, including voting for the selection of new members.
SSN Main Roles
Members are divided into two groups:
•
Patients
- The joined member acts as a simulated patient, an “ill person”, an activity to provide simulators for Level 8 to Level 12 students (Introduction to Medicine, Internal Medicine 1 & Internal Medicine 2).
•
Student Tutor
- The member explains, applies, trains, and teaches clinical skills to students in levels lower than the eighth level, thus preparing them and giving them an idea of the upcoming levels and reviewing clinical skills relevant to their level with them.
Summary Of Results
The SSN started as an active project three months ago. The number of members is 20 boys and 15 girls. The registered list to be a simulator is almost approaching 75 students. The number of simulated sessions participated was 65, with more than two simulators per session. The student tutor activity sessions were around ten, and more than five students participated in each session.
Discussion And Conclusion
There are numerous network membership benefits, including supplying simulators for teaching skills, practicing clinical skills thus mastering the techniques, learning soft skills, and obtaining a volunteering certificate.
Take Home Messages
Students learn clinical skills better from each other.
