This chapter traces some of the consequential impacts of Nauru's refugee industry “boom” period, questioning the impending post-refugee moment that the island is quickly approaching. The figure of the refugee remains a crucial part of Nauru's local economy, feeding the Australian border-spectacle imaginary in the process. The chapter assesses how budget allocations to Nauru are winding down in a country, and region, that finds itself in a moment of gradual transition. The chapter then considers the ways that residents in Nauru are creating new economic possibilities, some of which hold serious environmental consequences for local islanders. It provides a nuanced portrayal of the ways that people in Nauru deal with the aftereffects of the refugee industry and continue to hold concerns for the sustainability of their community.
