Abstract On 15 August 1892, Gladstone went to Osborne House to receive the Queen’s commission to form a government: the only one of the four times on which she did not seriously attempt to find an alternative.† She did not need to: Gladstone’s party position was unassailable, but his political position was broken by the results of the general election. Early results at the start of July were ‘even too rosy’, but a gain of So British seats at least was expected.
