Small town
View through Europeana Collections
Richard Thierbach painted a small resin village here. The church around which the houses are grouped forms the center of the place. The mountains surround this small place. The blue sky is slightly cloudy, the sun shines the forest-lying meadow and the rest of the landscape.
The picture is signed at the bottom right.
Richard Thierbach was born in 1860 as the son of a count official in Stolberg/Harz. He died in 1931 in Stolberg/Harz. In Nordhausen he learned the profession of lithographer. From 1880 he began his training at the Grand Ducal School of Art in Weimar. Thierbach’s most important teacher was the landscape painter Professor Theodor Hagen. Richard Thierbach was awarded a scholarship and the Academic Golden Medal at the end of his studies. At Eugen BBei he continued his training in Berlin in 1886/87. He participated in exhibitions and was able to live quite well from the sale of his paintings. Museums such as the collection “Neue Meister” in Dresden or the Pinakothek in Munich bought pictures of him. He was represented at the annual Vienna exhibitions 1884, 1888, 1891 and 1892, at the major Berlin art exhibitions 1886, 1887, 1889, 1891, 1892, 1894 to 1898 and at the Munich art exhibitions 1889 to 1892. At the world exhibition in Chikago he was represented with a resin painting. In 1897 his father died and Thierbach returned to Stolberg.
From now on, he painted motifs of his homeland almost exclusively. About 700 paintings and numerous graphics were created. (Wernigerode Harz Museum)
