Vas The Southern Song Dynasty, Longquan.
View through Europeana Collections
VAS (wreck). Printed pear-shaped, with a high cylindrical neck, around the mouth with a smooth ribbon and on a oblique high foot edge, in this an elongated hole. The glaze greyish green (so-called celadone colored), cracked, covered outside, under the bottom and inside the neck, on the outside a slight unglazed depression (manufacturing defect). The estate gray, visible at the edge of the foot.
The vase is in fact a “wreck estate,” ie. porcelain that has broken during burning. The foot is broken and fragments of sand from the furnace have become stuck in the glaze. It is an interesting object, however, since it is an example of
the ceramics produced in Longquan for the imperial court, in the style of the official Guangoat. During the Southern Song Dynasty (1127 - 1279), special furnaces were laid in the imperial city (Hangzhou) to make pottery for the palace. This pottery was black and thin, with several layers
of shimmering celadone glaze. At the time, the official furnaces did not make it possible to carry out the large orders of imperial goods. At that time, officials from the palace were sent south to get help from Longquan with the orders. The Hallwylska vase has an elegant shape with a hairy foot,
Like Guangoats, a thin black body and thick glaze. It is slightly different from other objects from Longquan.
