The term e-book is commonly understood as a simple digital replica of a print book, yet this definition proves increasingly inadequate. Defining the “electronic book” in the 21st century requires a broader, more elastic understanding than simply equating it with digitized print. This expanded conception must account for the hybrid, transmedial, and often experimental forms emerging at the intersection of publishing and digital media.
An expanded definition of the electronic book needs to include unconventional digital forms that blur boundaries with other media, such as games, apps, and social platforms. These “book mutants” exist at the intersections of genres, media, and industry practices, challenging traditional academic and commercial classifications while redefining what a “book” can be in the digital age.
Electronic books have evolved far beyond their origins as digital codices, adopting new affordances enabled by digital media. From enhanced electronic books with multimedia content to interactive story apps, game books, and augmented reality experiences, these forms leverage multimodality and interactivity while often maintaining a connection to print traditions. It is instructive to examine this tension between continuity and transformation, how digital forms both preserve the essence of the book and expand its possibilities, and the strategies of a range of major players, including the “big five” book publishers (Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Macmillan Publishers) and technology giants like Amazon, Apple, and Google. Contrasts are evident in the conservative approaches of traditional publishers, which largely focus on electronic books close to print conventions, with the experimentation seen at the periphery of publishing. These smaller producers explore the unique capabilities of the digital medium, creating works that defy categorization but remain deeply connected to the book’s cultural and functional heritage.
What is the electronic book’s role as both a continuation and reinvention of the book? How are emerging digital artifacts reshaping the experience of reading by merging it with the languages, genres, and pleasures of other media? Perhaps there is a more inclusive and dynamic definition of the electronic book, one that embraces innovation and hybridity as essential to the book’s ongoing evolution.
