Evaluation of XCT image quality
View through CrossRef
The direct visual quality of an X-ray computed tomography (XCT) image is very subjective. Metrics to quantify the image quality have been defined for X-ray radiography, but some of these no longer seem appropriate for XCT images. This has been highlighted through an XCT interlaboratory comparison campaign, performed in the XCT working group of the French Confederation for Non-destructive Testing (COFREND), on an additively manufactured part at medium-energy XCT (230-520 kV). The calculation of several of these metrics has been performed on the images acquired with nine different XCT systems to demonstrate their representativeness and compared to visual inspections. This comparison campaign confirms that several of them are no longer representative of the image quality.
