“CHRISTIAN ANTIQUITY” IN THE ORNAMENTS OF GALLA PLACIDIA MAUSOLEUM IN RAVENNA

View through CrossRef
The article considers the meander and star ornament of mosaics in Galla Placidia Mausoleum in Ravenna. The purpose of the work is to identify how the antique ornament meaning changes in the Christian art. The results of the work testify to the conformity of ornament symbolism to the disclosure of human likeness to God, which makes it possible to point out the primacy of the theological idea of perichoresis in the symbolic realism of “Christian antiquity”. Originality of the study lies in the fact that the author introduces literary sources of an iconographic program of mosaics into scientific use.
