The article sets a task to characterize the expeditionary activity of E.S. Fedorov (1853–1919) on the geological survey of the Northern Urals for the period 1884–1889, which became the fi rst scientifi c research of the Geological Committee in the North of Russia. On the basis of study of a wide range of archival and published sources, the author examines the main tasks and results of E.S. Fedorov’s work in the Northern Urals, the everyday conditions of many years of expeditionary activity. It was determined that the obtained scientifi c results became innovative for that period. E.S. Fedorov laid foundations for the petrographic study of the Northern Urals, proposed a special boat survey method, discovered new mineral deposits. In conclusion, the author underlines the significant contribution of E.S. Fedorov to the establishment of the systematic explorations of the European North of Russia.
