Manuscripts Of Lemaire’S Poetry

Abstract
Though his career partly overlapped with Molinet’s, Jean Lemaire de Belges belonged to a younger generation of poets, to whom printing was more familiar and who were apt to exploit the new medium. Accordingly, printing plays a greater role in transmitting his works than it did for Molinet; indeed, as I discuss in the next chapter, Lemaire apparently participated in publication on several occasions. Yet his work also survives in numerous manuscripts. Several of these exhibit features which, in con- junction, suggest they were probably presentation manuscripts: they are of high material quality (written on parchment, illustrated, or both), and transmit pieces by Lemaire in versions which pre-date their printed redactions, or which were never printed in the sixteenth century.
