The ‘Catalogue of Heroines’

The chapter contains the analysis of the so-called ‘Catalogue of Heroines’ in which the idea of the ‘poetics of Hades’ is fully explained through the discussion of the narratives of the heroines. The great women of the past whom Odysseus meets in Hades often retell their stories from their own personal perspective; in doing so they ignore or even alter the mainstream epic tradition by presenting a version of their story with any details they choose to disclose, highlight, or omit. The chapter further presents an argument for the importance of the catalogue as an integral part of Odyssey 11, in which Homer offers an alternative approach to the epic past, as opposed to more canonical texts such as Hesiod’s Catalogue of Women.
