Maybe I’m idealizing it from the outside, but when cartoonists get together it seems like an unusually supportive scene.
Gabrielle Bell:
Well, it’s hard to relate to people who aren’t cartoonists when you’re spending all your time drawing comics and no one understands how hard it is. That’s really pathetic sounding, but if you’re a violinist or even a writer, there’s some respect for it. So we get together, and we’re the only ones that understand. Maybe it’s that way with other mediums, like with writers. But with writers there seems to be a lot of jealousy. There’s jealousy among cartoonists too, but there’s also camaraderie because we have less....
