On the carpet, in Arabic, is a quote from the Qur'an: \"The most excellent of you, by God, is the most God-fearing." (Qur'an 49:13, second half). The first half of this verse (not on this carpet) is much quoted: \"O people, We created you from a man and a woman, and We made you into nations and tribes so that you might know one another.‖ This rug was a diplomatic gift and was never used, but rugs with Qur'anic quotations were usually hung as decorations in the homes of wealthy families (Bowker 2014: 73).
