View through Europeana Collections
The original is in Schloss Mosigkau, Germany (Dessau-Mosigkau 1976, nr 18, avb. 21, oil on canvas, 119x103). It was probably carried out during van Dycks' stay in The Hague in the winter of 1631-1632 when the prince was six years old. Van Dyck also repulsed the prince’s parents, Prince Frederik Hendrick and Amalia van Solms, while in The Hague, the seat of the Oran court. Wilhelm II became a steel keeper at his father’s death in 1647, but died only three years later. The orange tree on the left and the coat of arms with a lion standing with its hind legs is attached to the Oran house. The painting is an early copy after van Dycks portraits. Particularly notice of the weak articulation in the left arm and hand. Four other full-figure copies are known; (1) at the art dealer A.F. Grunwald, St Charles, Illinois, 1966 (oil on canvas, 127x97); (2) Petworth House, Sussex, (3) Narodni Museum, Prague; (4) Duke of Portland’s Collection, Walbeck Abbey. A copy in a three-quarter figure can be found at Warwick Castle. - * - The original of this original is in Schloss Mosigkau, original Dessau, Germany It was was under van Dyck 's in the Hauge in the winter of 1631-1632 when the Prince was six.
