From breakfast service, “Coupe”
View through Europeana Collections
Two bowl-shaped breakfast cups with turned foot and gilded angles and barrels. Decor in the form of wide ornamental stretchers in several colours on the glaze of both copper and barrel with Louis Philippes crowned monogram in grisaille within dark red square cartusch on the barrel. The two cups bear the castle stamp from Tuilierna while the two casks bear the castle stamp from Fontainbleau, which is unusual when the model was intended for the castle Tuilierna. The model for the cup, which appeared in several sizes, was created in the early 1800s by architect Charles Percier, as a preserved sketch in the factory archive shows. The decor on the cup was chosen as the king’s tableware in the castle of Fontainebleau with inspiration from the Renaissance and with motifs with animals from the castle’s wild-rich forests (2). It is referred to as “ordinary” as opposed to the so-called “valuable” or “historical” servisen where the imagery motifs of the plates depict the history of the castle. These plates were later walled into the panels of the gallery in the party floor (3). It was not long before the servis was imitated by counterfeiters and a variety of copies are known. The stamps on these cups bear the name of the Tuileries, which shows that they cannot be original despite the exquisite decor, as the castles did not contain any breakfast cups. The stamps in natural scurries as well as the shape themselves lead to the conclusion that it is rather overdecorated porcelain than pure counterfeits. Overdecorated porcelain. (1) The mark of the defendant Francois Joseph Thion (active 1801-1848) (Chevallier, 1996, p. 413) (2) Barbe, Gérard, LeService du Roi Louis-Philippe au chateau de Fontainebleau. Paris 1989. (3) Chevallier, 1996, p. 212-213. Price: 26 Kr. See Toiletbok 26 Feb 1897.
