Ratzinger and Augustine

View through CrossRef
Abstract Augustine runs in Ratzinger’s bloodstream. Ratzinger’s thinking is Augustinian in the way in which it connects faith and reason, and in its pastoral orientation. Ratzinger addresses his most esoteric writings to questions which an ordinary person could well be asking. He enters sympathetically into the questions of modern people. He seeks to find a literal or symbolic meaning in scripture, rather than demythologising scripture, as Bultmann would have done. Ratzinger’s best and most typical works are his most popular ones, often drawn from homilies, like In the Beginning, his little book about Genesis 1–3.
