Ladders
View through Europeana Collections
The series of installations "Ladders", one of which belongs to the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, reveals Aperghis' constant search for a definition of art. In the first version of the work, which was presented at the Municipal Gallery of Modena, he included the recorded speech of his voice, in which he repeated in Italian the phrase: "Salgo; Perché NO? Ma dove vanno? NON SO TU SAI?". Their next presentation was at the Magazzini del Sale showroom, where they were executed in huge dimensions to fit the space. In the following years, adopting multiple means of expression, such as sound, photography, video, he creates environments in which the "staircase" motif dominates in order to define the concept of the universal artwork.
