La région pétrolifère d'Hassi Messaoud , où le pétrole jaillit pour la première fois en 1956, a produit plus de 33 000 000 t de pétrole en 1969. Sur ce total, près de 19 000 000 t ont été fournies par le champ d'Hassi Messaoud proprement dit, exploité par la C.F.P. (A.) et la S.N.RE.P.AL. ; toutefois, des difficultés liées à la structure interne du réservoir ralentissent le rythme de la production. Plus de 5000 personnes se sont fixées dans la région d'Hassi Messaoud. Les deux compagnies pétrolières ont édifié des bases pour loger leur personnel ; un embryon de ville est sorti de terre ; des gourbis ont été construits, pour la plupart dans de petites dépressions échancrant la surface du plateau. L'avion est le moyen de liaison le plus commode avec l'extérieur, en particulier avec les centres de direction de cette exploitation, centres situés à Alger et à Paris.
