Mr. Derby

View through CrossRef
The chapter opens with a biographical sketch of Matt Winn and how he became the unlikely savior of the Kentucky Derby. Following his accepting the task of reviving Churchill Downs and the Derby, the chapter discusses his actions in promoting the track and its marquee race and the unexpected help he received from American politics. The discussion then turns to the horses that helped build the Derby's reputation in the 1910s. It concludes with a look at where Winn and his track were in 1923, preparing for that year's Derby.
