Two Sheperds

The painting is among the last completed in Paris before Eckersberg set out for Rome. It appears to be a figure study that has been elaborated to depict two shepherds of antiquity. The blocks of stone are very reminiscent of the wooden crates arranged at the studio as the artists decided on the poses they wanted the models to assume. Eckersberg has obviously been greatly interested in the distribution of light and shadow on the two bodies, placing the models so that one man is lit from the front, the other from the back. According to his diary, Eckersberg completed this painting on 10 April 1813 (cf. Eckersberg 2009). In a letter to Clemens he described it in the following terms: “Etude, two shepherds; the older explaining something to the younger.” (Eckersberg, 1947, 136.) It was exhibited at Charlottenborg in 1814 (cat. 18) while Eckersberg was in Rome.
