Par la bulle Sol oriens du 7 avril 1317, Jean XXII canonisa le fils du comte de Provence et roi de Sicile, l’évêque de Toulouse Louis d’Anjou, mort en 1297, dont il avait été familier peu avant sa mort. Cette brève familiarité contribua certainement à l’ascension ultérieure de Jacques Duèze, qui entra ensuite au service de Charles II et bénéficia de ses faveurs. En 1308, alors qu’il était évêque de Fréjus, il témoigna lors d’une enquête du procès de canonisation.
