Phenolic Constituents of Norway Spruce Resistant or Susceptible to the Eastern Spruce Gall Aphid
View through CrossRef
Abstract
Simple phenols and polyphenols were studied in the foliage of Picea abies trees known to be either resistant or susceptible to the eastern spruce gall aphid (
Adelges abietis
L.). Fourteen resistant and 20 susceptible trees were sampled. More than 35 phenolic compounds were detected by thin layer chromatography. Total phenol content was higher in resistant than in susceptible trees. An unknown phenol with a UV spectral maximum at 272 nm in 95 percent ethanol was consistently present in resistant trees, but not in susceptible trees. Presence of this unknown phenol and higher total phenol content may be associated with
Adelges
resistance in Norway spruce. Forest Sci. 21:180-184.
