“Venus of the Capitol”: Madame Tallien and the Politics of Beauty Under the Directory
View through CrossRef
Following the Terror and until the rise of Napoléon, beautiful women such as Thérésia Tallien occupied an important political and cultural position made possible by the particular historical context after Thermidor and under the Directory. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century biographers of Madame Tallien were so focused on her beauty, style, and reputation for promiscuity and so fascinated with the “corrupt” role of the Merveilleuses that it can be difficult to understand the real influence of women like her. Her efforts toward political reconciliation have been overshadowed by the recorded memory of her beauty, fashion sense, and love of luxury. Napoléon’s ascent to power would significantly limit women’s political influence as respectability came to mean as much as—perhaps more than—beauty and celebrity. While beautiful women always exercise a kind of power, the political system and climate can circumscribe their influence on political events.

Following the Terror and until the rise of Napoléon, beautiful women such as Thérésia Tallien occupied an important political and cultural position made possible by the particular historical context after Thermidor and under the Directory.
