Mango Season, Crawford Market, Mumbai, Maharashtra
View through Harvard Museums
Vividly capturing the spirit of the bazaar or market in Bombay in the mango season in summer, this photograph comes from a series of photographs of Bombay done by Raghubir Singh the renowned photographer from India. The Crawford market is a well- known wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Bombay, named after the first municipal commissioner, Arthur Crawford.
Raghubir Singh's work is heavily influenced by the work of the French Photographer Henri Cartier Bresson and his philosophy of the 'Decisive moment'. His photographs speak not just of the every day mundane existence of ordinary Indians but produce a true cultural experience illustrating for the viewer the essence of contemporary India. This photograph of the crowded market of Bombay captures Bresson's philosophy of the 'decisive moment' when the busy porters have taken a short tea break.
He was awarded the prestigious Padmashri award- A civilian award given by the Government of India in 1983. This photograph has been published in Raghubir Singh's book, Bombay: Gateway of India, 1994.
