Abstract Despite Liberal weaknesses, at the beginning of 1874 there was little reason to expect a rapid return to power. In fact, Disraeli was prime minister again before the beginning of the session, owing to Gladstone’s unexpected dissolution and decisive defeat at the election. The Conservatives had over 350 seats. Disraeli took office on 18ruary. At last he had achieved his great ambition, power with a majority—something that had seemed impossible for most of his life.
