La question de la mémoire volontaire se pose chez Michelet dans le cadre de la genèse de l’œuvre mais elle interroge également la fonction du travail historique. Pour Michelet, l’historien est en effet un fondateur de mémoire dont le rôle est de transformer une mémoire involontaire (consubstantielle à la succession des générations) en mémoire consciente et volontaire. Pour cela, il lui faut intérioriser la mémoire historique (livresque) et la fondre dans sa mémoire intime, rendre à la mémoire consciente les souvenirs incorporés par le sujet collectif et les inscrire par le biais de son œuvre dans un mouvement réflexif.
