View through Artsy
Born during the 2nd world war, in Sicily, Arturo Di Modica was conditioned to fight. By 18, he had decided that he would become an artist but his father disapproved. Undeterred he ran away from home on a steam train for Florence - here he worked alongside Henry Moore, who nicknamed him 'the young Michelangelo'. By the time of his death in Feb 2021, he had risen up to create one of the world's most iconic works of art, Charging Bull, which he dropped illegally during the night in 1989 as a gift.
