<span>Hace cien años, la Academia Sueca estaba entregando los primeros premios Nobel, el 10 de diciembre de 1901. El primero que lo recibió en el área de la química fue Jacobus Hendricus vant Hoff, nacido en Rotterdam, Holanda, en 1852, como un reconocimiento por descubrir las leyes de la cinética química y las leyes que gobiernan la presión osmótica de las disoluciones (Fleck, 1993). Más que ninguna otra persona, vant Hoff creó la estructura formal de la fisicoquímica, desarrolló la estereoquímica y la termodinámica de las disoluciones electrolíticas, formalizó la cinética química y fue cofundador y coeditor de Zeitschrift für Physikalische Chemie, la primera revista de fisicoquímica.</span>
