Lace was used in great quantities throughout this period; it is the ideal material for conveying the impression of expensive femininity so highly valued during the last years of the nineteenth century, and, particularly, during the opulent Edwardian period that followed it. Hand-made and machine-made laces were both used, but machine-made lace by this period was by far the more popular. However, it still depended very largely on the hand-made for its inspiration, so it would be as well first to consider what part the hand-made product still played in fashion at this time.
