Abstract This essay analyzes how enslaved literate workers interacted with Roman grammatical knowledge and skills, and how they were objectified by enslavers as grammatical curiosities. The essay first explores the technical grammatical training offered to and by enslaved people, observing how such labor was often rendered invisible. The second section turns to writings by Athenaeus of Naucratis and Julius Pollux to understand how enslaved people functioned as grammatical and philological curiosities for elite literate audiences. Finally, the essay uses Black feminist scholar Hortense Spillers’s concept of an “American grammar book” to discuss the practice of (nick)naming individuals or groups of enslaved people.
