View through CrossRef
Abstract: Australia's geographic nomenclature includes nearly ive million toponyms (placenames). Among them are a relatively limited number with an intriguing Serbian connection. The origin of existing toponyms is examined to determine when, why, and by whom the names were given. Toponyms appearing to be of Serbian origin are identiied and assessed in an effort to avoid misunderstanding and misappropriating their etymologies. Potential toponyms associated with a miner's homestead, a residential subdivision, a proposed settlement, and a colloquial designation are discussed. The inluence of Serbian immigrants upon the naming process is evaluated in terms of migratory waves, settlement patterns, and toponym type.
