An east view of Newstead Abbey showing the house, the Great Garden and the Mill Lake; with Folly Castle and the Battery in the distance. Signed and dated lower left corner: "BYRON 1758". In (original?) carved and gilt wood frame bearing traces of silvering. Details include a white garden seat in the style of William Kent (lower right) with a gentleman and lady walking nearby on the terrace; to the left gardeners at work; four white garden statues, one at each corner of the reflecting pond. Known to have been presented by the artist to his nephew the 5th Earl of Carlisle; by descent to The Hon. Simon Howard of Castle Howard (Castle Howard Cat. No. 563); Castle Howard auction sale 1991 (not inc. in sale catalogue); presented to Mr W.H.Gordon-Smith.
