This article is based on a talk given by Jane Martin at the House of Commons on 12 November 2024 presenting the life and work of educationalist Caroline Benn (née DeCamp), 1926‐2000. The American wife of Tony Benn (1925‐2014), one of the most influential postwar
socialists in Europe, Caroline was internationally known for her advocacy of comprehensive education. Drawing on Caroline’s archive, this introduction to a larger biographical study suggests why her experience merits close investigation, and that telling her story opens the way to recognition
of the kind of change needed in schools and the wider education system to secure equality of outcome and a more democratic society.
