Exile and Instrumentality in the Emily Books

View through CrossRef
The chapter returns to one of the most cherished observations about the Emily books, namely their debt to Wordsworth, particularly through Emily’s flash. By way of a careful and personal re-examination of the subtlest nuances of Wordsworth’s “flash that has revealed/The invisible world,” Lim argues for a new understanding of Emily’s flash through a more precise understanding of Wordsworth. Lim demonstrates that an inevitable element of Emily’s Romantic insight is displacement, alienation from exactly the elements of companionship and belonging that she most desires, adding a new dimension to one of the most familiar ways of reading the trilogy.
