Водоемы, находящиеся на особо охраняемых природных территориях, являются важными объектами мониторинга, поскольку результаты исследований позволяют оценить функционирование экосистем в условиях, близких к естественным. Более того, водоросли могут быть использованы для сохранения и поддержания биоразнообразия водных экосистем, а также при оценке степени отклонения их свойств и функций в условиях антропогенно нарушенного ландшафта. Природным заповедникам принадлежит особое место среди наиболее эффективных форм охраны биоразнообразия. Они создаются с целью сохранения в природном состоянии типичных или уникальных для данной ландшафтной зоны природных комплексов со всей совокупностью их компонентов, включая водорослевые сообщества
