The research aims to find out the affiliation of Alexander Čaks’s (1901–1950) family to different denominations throughout the century. What were the goals of the family members in accepting Orthodoxy in the middle of the 19th century? How was the family’s connection with the church formed in Bērzaune, Koknese and Riga when, after the abolition of serfdom in the middle of the 19th century, the opportunity opened for Latvian farmers to acquire their own land? Čaks’s faith choices were fluid throughout his life, influenced by his changing locations in different countries and cultures due to political conditions. The research concluded that Čaks’s religious affiliation was determined by the choices of his father’s family in the middle of the 19th century, which helped the poet in difficult situations during his life but did not contribute to Čaks’s inclusion in the congregation of the Orthodox Church. Most often, Čaks visited the Saint Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Church in Riga for practical reasons, as it was the closest to where he lived; however, Čaks relatively rarely addressed Christian themes in his literary works.
