This chapter looks at Jean-Jacques Rousseau's letter to Claire Cramer, the wife of a Genevan publisher, on February 12, 1761. This is a response to a letter that Cramer wrote to congratulate Rousseau on the success of Julie . Rousseau begins the letter by acknowledging Cramer's wit and telling her that “this reading was not suited to you, since it did not inspire you with anything.” He then says that “tender souls are often weak, and it is always a crime for a woman to be weak.” Finally, Rousseau mentions that the book reached all the way to Geneva without his consent, before expressing his gratitude and respect for Cramer.
