Portrait Adolf Johann I, Pfalzgraf von Zweibrücken-Kleeburg (1629-1689)
View through Europeana Collections
Portrait Adolph Johann I The Swedish Imperial Marshal is shown here as a chest pattern to the left. His quiet view is directed towards the viewer. He wears long, curly hair and a thin mustache. His clothes are made of armor, a cloak or a sash is wound above his right shoulder and he has a slightly raised collar around his neck. A curtain can be seen behind it and a window opening on the left. The portrait is oval. This is followed in three lines by the Latin inscription with the most outstanding activities of the depicted.
Adolph Johann I received the duke’s title of Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Kleeburg from his older brother Karl Gustav in 1654, when he became king of Sweden. Adolph Johann had already become governor general of Västergötland, Dalsland, VBereits land and Halland. But with his new title he gave up this post. Before 1654 Adolf Johann had been Swedish Imperial Marshal for a year, the successor of Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, his brother-in-law, the man of his sister. So he had taken a military career early on. From 1657 he was governor general of the Swedish troops remaining in the now hostile Prussia. Thus, he repeatedly commuted back and forth between Germany and Sweden.
There is nothing in the sheet about the engraver or designer of the image. It could be an obituary of Philipp Kilian (1628-1693), whose portrait can be found today in the Duke August library in Wolfenbüttel and in the Stiftung Händel-Haus (BS-III 497). The removed template was probably created by the Dutch court painter David Beck (1621-1656). On the back of the paper it is pointed out that it must be a engraving of the German-French copper engraver Peter Aubry d.J.. The Austrian National Library in Vienna contains several copies of the book.
