The Reception of the Books of Kings in Islam

Abstract
This chapter offers an overview of the traces left by the books of Kings in the most significant Islamic corpora, i.e., the Qurʾan, ḥadīṯ, taʾrīkh, qiṣaṣ al-anbiyā’, and adab. It shows how the Qurʾanic corpus and Islamic tradition give a very limited place to the books of Kings. Although minor, connections are revealed through three major figures: David, Solomon and Elijah. Their characteristics are drawn not only from the Bible but also and mostly from Jewish and Christian postbiblical texts. While the books of Kings present a history of salvation (Israel’s disobedience and its punishment, which is accompanied by messianic hope), Islam presents the action of God through the sending of prophets.
