This chapter details Jean-Jacques Rousseau's letter to Philibert Cramer on October 13, 1764. Rousseau begins the letter by telling Cramer that he draws upon Cramer “a letter of 1,300 French livres payable in ten days from receipt to the order of Messieurs Borel, Bosset, and Guyenet.” He says that his writings can please only “those who read them with the same heart that dictated them.” Rousseau claims that his faults must be censured and his errors corrected, but his sentiments must be loved because they are good and honorable. He also asserts that it was necessary to show the origin of all the vices in the history of the human heart.
