Postcolonial Theory
View through CrossRef
AbstractPostcolonial studies analyzes the legacy of violence of over 500 years of Western colonialism and the ways in which non‐Western people resist it. Its interest lies in the continuing significance of the colonial encounter for both Western and non‐Western people. Postcolonial theory constitutes a subfield of cultural studies even as it complicates not only the other subdisciplines that comprise cultural studies, but also the broader rubric of cultural studies itself. Postcolonial theory sinks deep theoretical roots into Marxism, feminism, and poststructuralism. Postcolonial theory studies migration and globalization, hybridity, diaspora, global momentum, transnationality, and transculturation. As it continues to evolve, postcolonial theory embraces multiple vantage points of gender, race, sexuality, and (inter)national identity.
