Abstract At around the same time as the Oedipus at Colonus was produced, Thucydides wrote the first extant version of the story that Theseus had united the Athenians into one state. Herodotus had mentioned Theseus in a passing reference to his abduction of Helen. There we learn that the Deceleans were quite annoyed with him for irresponsibly dragging them into a war against the Spartans.
