The article is devoted to one of the research cases of the Primorye State Art Gallery with objects of museum collections, namely the attribution of the engraved “Portrait of D.A. Rovinsky” made by V.E. Makovsky. The key element that required clarification was a remark in the margins of the print, the image of a child. As a result of source research, the involvement of historical and biographical information, comparison of data from the State Catalog of the Museum Fund of the Russian Federation, the Odessa Art Museum, the State Museum of L.N. Tolstoy, archival work, it was established who exactly is depicted in addition to the portrait and under what circumstances. Accordingly, the previously accepted attribution of this graphic work has been corrected. This is significant for the museum's accounting documentation, the unified state database of museum objects of the Russian Federation and provides important information for future research in the field of art.
