وانما لأنه تسجيل يومي لأمور مختلفة ومتنوعة في دمشق ومناطق أخرى في جوارها، وخاصة لأن الكاتب أدرج بها مقتبسات طويلة وتفاصيل من مستندات وقع عليها وكانت في حوزته بصفة وظيفته، والتي تسلط الضوء بشكل غير مسبوق على المجتمع الذي عاش فيه. تركز هذه المقالة على ظاهرتين لا نعرف عنها إلا القليل والتي توضحها لنا مؤلفات ابن طوق المميزة. الظاهرة الأولى هي مسألة الطلاق والظروف المالية والشروط التي كانت مقبولة في فترة الكاتب، والأخرى هي النزاعات الشخصية والنقاشات الشرعية بين علماء المذاهب الفقهية في دمشق. تكشف تقارير بن طوق عن هذه الامور -كما تكشف عن أمور أخرى تملأ صفحات يومياته - الكثير عن الحياة اليومية في مدينة مركزية في العالم الاسلامي عشية الاحتلال العثماني وتعد
